2026 Spring Cleanse

Splash Image

The spring cleanse is what I call the annual tradition of magically spring-cleaning my home. I clean, cleanse and bless my home as a ritual every day between March 1st and the Spring equinox. Southern hemispheres, alter the date however suits you.

The spring cleanse is an intensive practice that requires some degree of time, freedom and dedication. Most of the acts during the spring cleanse are things I only do once a year; it’s a DEEP clean. I began sharing it a few years back and each year a group of us work on it together. Everyone modifies it as needed, treating it like a guideline and not a rulebook. I frame it based upon my home, family and needs. Each home is different. For example: I do not have a garage, dining room or basement (that I utilize) but I do have a food pantry room, a playroom and a yard. Please modify it to fit your needs.

Let’s also define clean, cleanse and bless before we begin. In terms of this guide, cleaning is the act of physically cleaning away clutter, debris and dirt. Cleansing is energetically clearing away ALL energy — think of it as antibiotics. Blessing is refreshing the type of energy you want in space. I do all three in various spaces each day for three weeks. I also add in one day each week for rest or catching up. I encourage everyone to put in planned rest, even if it’s a different day each week.

Day 1: Sunday — Empty the walls

Take all your winter decorations down, clean and put them away. Take down all wall hangings, pictures, decorations. Strip the walls bare. Keep year-round items in a basket or bin to go back up at the end of the cleansing periods.

Mundane reason: You take your clothes off before you shower, we strip the house down for this deep cleansing. This allows you to see what repairs may need done and it also resets your mind. We get used to what we see for an extended period of time. It loses its special value in our subconscious. Having the home go commando for a few weeks will reset it so we’re used to bare and then the umph of putting everything up is all the more potent.

Magical reason: Echoing above, this subconscious reset directly impacts the energetic and spiritual flow of your home. And don't forget, energy “dust bunnies” love to hide. Get rid of their hiding spaces. Additionally, putting things back up is useful later for both mundane and magical reasons.

Day 2: Monday — Wash the windows, blinds curtains and curtain rods

Self blessing/spell for clarity in all things. Curtains are the only “decor” I will keep up, for privacy reasons. But they need to be washed. It’s an item not too many people think to wash regularly.

Mundane: Curtains get gross. They absorb everything in your air, including your farts. It may sound silly, and believe me my kids laughed at this, but it’s true. The air everyone in your home puts out is absorbed by the fabrics in your home. Those curtains are nasty. The windows, blinds, the rod holding the curtains up- they all need the grime removed.

Magical: Exact same as above, the energy of your home is in the windows AND how the outside world views you too. Windows are a very big area of energy focus. Ranging from ill intent aimed at you to just how you look at the world, the energy in your windows is a powerful tool. All tools need to be cleaned. This is an ideal time to place clarity spells on yourself, masking spells on others and or wards on your windows.

Day 3: Tuesday — Let’s give our bathrooms a little TLC today

Do the usual scrubbing of surfaces, sweep and mop. Scrub out the tub or shower and clean off all mirrors. If able, also strip all towels.

Mundane: I like to focus on a zone and this year Tuesday is bathroom day. We have three tuesdays in the spring cleansing period so let’s start with the ordinary deep cleaning that, let’s be real, we all say we do regularly but no we don't. Time to bust the soap scum that’s been driving you crazy.

Magical: The bathroom is an area of love, hate and purification. From romantic shower adventures to hating the way you look in the mirror to a three day marathon of a stomach bug, this room gets a LOT of energy use that we seldom realize is energy use. Today we’re pampering the bathroom. Treat it like an elderly loved one, give it a good cleaning out of love with the view of it being alive. This is an act of service for all the times it’s supported us.

Day 4: Wednesday — Clean out the refrigerator and freezer

Clean storage for cups and bowls.

Mundane: Fairly straight forward, these places get messy quickly. Take everything out, give it a good wipe down and put everything (that you plan to keep) away. Unexpired, unopened foods can be donated to a food pantry and optionally your local community page on social media (some even allow open foods, use discretion). Additionally, let’s be realistic, do we have TOO many cups? Is it time to rehome any of them?

Magical: Did someone say it’s time for a health spell? I am! “May I remember to nourish my body in a way that benefits its needs” is enough of a spell. Don’t forget to move out any bad feelings that may have lingered with the ice cream we ate while crying over the past BS year. I don’t want that sitting on my “hell yeah I got the promotion” celebratory ice cream.

Day 5: Thursday — ** POTENTIAL HEAVY WORK DAY** Sort through your wardrobe and rehome what you realistically won’t be wearing

Fast fashion is hard to beat and… This past year I was given so many promo Tees…. I can’t close my dresser drawer. Go through your closets, dressers, whatever you have. Go through your socks. If you haven’t worn it in the past six months, and don’t realistically see yourself wearing it in the next six months, is it better in a new home or role of service? It might make a better cleaning rag if it’s torn or stained. It might help someone going through a hard path in your community. If you’re not ACTUALLY going to DIY it into a pillow, don’t. Most of us aren’t, so let’s be real and spread the love — IF the clothing is usable. And toss what isn’t. Those ripped undies aren’t useful to anyone; trash them.

Mundane: Most of us own way too much. There is enough clothing on this planet, right now, to cloth six generations of human beings- so I’ve read. The solution ISN’T to hold on to unused items or keep a torn tee in the closet in the hopes you’ll craft with it. The solution is to stop bringing it in what we don’t need. This year, I am not breaking this up into two days. Seeing just how much we have, all at once, can help us make a better impact.

Magical: Don’t forget that clothing is not just protection from the cold or UV rays, it’s a layer of energetic defence. Thank the clothes and trust your gut, if an article feels gunky, air it out. Sound cleanse it, wash it in water, do what you feel is needed.

Day 6: Friday — Rest and Reflect

Built into every spring cleanse are rest days. These are days to NOT add additional work load but rather take some time to sit with how you’re feeling as the cleansing period progresses. You may be feeling heavier or lighter, take note. If you’re behind, use this day to catch up.

Day 7: Saturday — Wash your home’s entrance(s)

Literally wash down the door(s) both inside and out. Spruce up any entry ways as desired.

Mundane: I don’t think people realize how dirty doors get. We touch them ALL the time, how often do we think to clean them? When I moved into my house, it had some damage and I thought the marks on the door were chipped paint. The spring cleanse showed me it was caked on dirt. I am still shocked five years later.

Magical: Do you ever get the tingles when doing a reading or energy work? I’m getting the tingles. What I am receiving is that this year, cleaning our doors is possibly the most vital aspect of the spring cleanse.  I don’t feel this is for any one specific individual, let’s all deep clear and protect our doors. Place strong wards of protection, tools to clear energy as people pass through the door. Our door is stronger than the window, remember window day? Well this IS how we enter and exit. Safety, it's a safety issue.

Day 8: Sunday — Clean our cooking appliances

The oven microwave, coffee maker, crockpot, rice cooker, blender, airfryer. Whatever appliances you have that you use to cook meals. Let’s give them extra TLC today. The ceiling of my microwave is embarrassing because it sits on a low shelf and I cannot see the ceiling… So how often do I clean it? Not enough. So often, we’re in a rush and do an adequate, at best, wipe down. Today we are thanking the appliances that help us feed ourselves and\or families by giving them a lovely spa treatment.

Mundane: This will help to  prolong their life. The toaster is less likely to fry out if we get that stuck piece of bagel off the heating wire. Built up gunk causes issues everywhere, lets remove that gunk. Here’s looking at you crockpot knob…. Digging you out like a car in that snowstorm.

Magical: Kitchen witches to the front! These are our tools, even if you are not a kitchen witch, you cook. These are your tools. No matter your craft, you take care of your tools. The purpose of these tools, ultimately, are to fuel your body. Properly care for your tools as a health spell. “May I always have access to the nutrition I need. May I always have the ability to prepare nutritious meals. May I always have the will to care for myself” is a spell and an act of love.

Day 9: Monday — Hallways, stairways & closets

Bonus, lightswitches. Today we’re gonna clean off banisters on the stairway(s), wipe down hallway baseboards, get the detailer out of the vacuum to get the gunk out from the edges and if you have hallway closets, dust those clutter bugs out. This is not bedroom closets, just any linen closets or other storage areas in the traffic areas of the home- hallways. Banisters get FILTHY, really really filthy. Even if we are hand washing regularly, our oils and dead skin slowly build up on high contact surfaces and lets be real, how often do we scrub the banister? If you’ve never scrubbed it, that is OKAY, most people don’t think to. I encourage you to use a white cloth just to blow your own mind. Get the broom and dust away cobwebs at the top of hall ways — all the decorations should be down so you’ll really be noticing any repairs that need to be made about now.

Mundane: These high traffic, low use areas do not get much attention. When we sweep or vacuum, we often push dirt into the crevices and that seldom gets cleaned up. In my old apartment, I had a linen closet in the hallway and that would get a general tidying up today. My current home does not have any hallway closets but if you have the time and spoons, and have one, try to at least air it out today.

Magical: Our hallways and stairways are the arteries of our homes. They’re where the energy flows from one room to the other and frankly. Just like our arteries, we don’t give them enough attention. Think of today as a wash out to do preventive care for clotting. Take a moment and just stand in your hallway, or on your stairway. Breath, where does that energy flow? Is it fast? Slow? Chaotic? Smooth? Is the flowing of that energy how you want it to flow in your home?

Note, not all homes have hallways. If your home doesn’t have a specific hallway, treat your doorways/thresholds inside the home as hallways.

Day 10: Tuesday — We are back in the bathroom today

Today we’re going through the storage in the bathrooms. Medicine cabinets, drawers, shelves, bins. Take everything off/out, clean the storage apparatus and sort through EVERY item. Is it expired? Do you really still use it? Would it better serve another home? Is the current organization method useful for you?

Mundane: We all buy some product and then never use it, it costs a pretty penny and we keep it for seven years out of guilt. Release it. If you have the capacity for it, reorganize the bathroom as needed. If you have more than one bathroom, focus on YOUR main bathroom. The one you use most.

Magical: The bathroom is our cleansing and releasing room. This builds up so much magical gunk that we don’t think of. If you can, open a window while cleaning it, no matter how cold, even if just for a few minutes. I’ve always done this but apparently it’s all the rage this year and they’re calling it “burping”... I call it airing out your house and it’s not new.

Day 11: Wednesday — We are half way there! How ya feeling?

Today we’re back in the kitchen. Kitchens vary by size SO much. If you can, go through and clean all your kitchen drawers. If that’s too big, go through what you can, prioritizing what touches your mouth first. Cutlery, followed by food contact items.

Mundane: Crumbs gather. Pull out your forks and wipe down whatever’s holding them because that stuff gets crumby. Be realistic, you don’t need five potato mashers. Rehome what you won’t use and don’t hold on to it past the spring cleanse. Clean out that junk drawer, it really isn’t an abyss once you get in there.

Magical: Once again, kitchen witches to the front! We are cleaning the tools of what we put into our body. This is not just a cute love and light topic, this enters into areas of eating disorders, self esteem, chronic illnesses and much more. What we put into our bodies impacts a lot of things, please add some self love into today’s working.

Day 12: Thursday — Cleaning our beds **Potential heavy work day**

Wash the bedding, flip the mattress, clean under the bed and for me this year, I’ll be cleaning the mattresses. I got an upholstery cleaner for the holidays and, as a joke, I did the edge of the mattress… the white mattress has grey water. So yes I’ll be cleaning the entirety of three beds in my home today. You can clap at your bed to clean it energetically, do what serves you.

Mundane: Mattress care saves money. Flip it, rotate it, save that few hundred dollar purchase til another year. I grew up poor where we would duct tape and put towels over holes in mattresses. That’s  real reality. If you don’t routinely wash your bedding, wash it today, you’ll enjoy tonight’s sleep and spoiler alert, tomorrow is a rest day so how perfect? After cleaning the mattress, I was aghast when the water came out grey. We used sheets AND a mattress pad, and it looked clean. So… Yeah, that’s gross. I’ll post pictures so we can gag together.

Magical: Your bed is often home to your dream space, your sexual space and many of your rawest thoughts. That energy may be fantastic or horrifying. Only clear it out if you feel it needs that. If you want to mundanely wash but magically keep, place the energy into another object while cleaning and replace it after — ask the objects permission first.  This is also a great place for more self love, rose water or mineral oil lightly sprinkled on the sheet or mattress may be appropriate.

Day 13: Friday — Friday the 13th!? Woohoo. Rest and reflect!

Ahhhhh those nice clean sheets felt good huh? Reflect on how you’re home feels both physically and energetically. If this isn't your first spring cleanse, compare it to the half way point in previous years. What do you feel needs attention? What feels better? If needed, use today to catch up.

Day 14: Saturday — Today we’re focusing on storage areas

This will look very different for all of us. It might mean a garage clean out day or that one shelf in your bedroom. It could be thawing out your deep freezer or cleaning out the truck of your car. Maybe you have a spare room turned into a crafting studio and it’s too overwhelming to do the room- do three shelves. Perhaps you have an under the bed box turned junk bin of doom, clear it out. Today we focus on storage, in an amount we have capacity for. Be real, purge. Purge what you realistically will not use. Have 119 bits of scrap yarn but only made one and a half projects in the past 12 months? We home them. It’s a day to let go.

Mundane: Humans hoard things. It might be your antique spoon collection or your 450 VHS tapes you're saving for doomsday binge watching. We hoard and place value on things. It’s harder on people with certain tendencies, some more hidden than others. Wanna save the environment? You might be guilty of saving bottle caps for friends art projects… here’s looking at the big jar of caps sitting next to my computer that I’ve been saving for a friend for seven months. It’s time to either give it or toss it. Clear out the space and let go.

Magical: Everything has energy. If it exists, it has energy. Cluttered homes host more energy and for some that is great, for others that is harmful. If you’re in the first category, finding clear paths of energy flow is important. If you're in the later one, clear it the hell out. Get rid of this stuff that we really aren’t gonna use. What you will and won’t use is ultimately up to you, but don’t lie to yourself. My friends’ art project is over, it’s time to toss these caps in recycling. Clear some of the energy sitting on my desk.

Day 15: Sunday — Today we’re cleaning up the main living area of our homes

Today we clean out the couch cushions, dust the back of the TV, go through board games and puzzles and clean off the bookshelves.  This is the main refresh of the living room. Pay attention to the bare walls today, if you have capacity. If you can and need to patch or paint, make note as to when you can complete that task. Every year I say I’m going to paint during the spring cleanse and every year I don’t. This is the 5th spring cleanse in this home so let’s see if I get it done. I will dust off my three bookcases filled with books and yes, I’ll decide if I’m going to rehome any. This is a bigger task with children's books as my kids are growing out of the beginner reader books. I’ll vacuum under the couch, endtables and recliner IF I have spoons. If not, that’s okay. Do what we can.

Mundane: Livingrooms get a lot of us and homes with kids or pets may get a lot of “it looks clean” days. I am pretty sure that every day someone “puts something away” without it being placed in its actually designated spot. Today is the reset for that. Clean slate it. Dust it off, those winter dust bunnies can be big. If possible, open a window.

Magical: In modern homes, there tend to be two places that now serve as the hearth of the home. The couch/entertainment stand or the dining table/stove top. Sit with your home and determine where the source of that home feeling comes from. When you think of being home, what spot comes first to mind? And keep in mind there are unlimited possibilities. IF your living room is your hearth, this is a really significant day. A cup of hot chocolate, a blanket and a book snuggled up on the couch. Watching movies with loved ones. Acting out scenes from a play with your partner. The living room holds big value in today’s society. Even if it’s not your heart, this clearing out holds a direct impact on day to day interactions. Add in something at the end. Please note, there IS a smoke/sound cleansing day designated at the very end of the cleansing period.

Day 16: Monday — Clean out our digital lives

I have never focused on this during the spring cleanse, but let’s be real… So much of our lives are digitally expressed now. Online is not evil, digital is not bad, screens are not harmful… in moderation. Just like everything else. Digital existence holds no moral value just as food holds no moral value… but too much (or even too little) is harmful. Let’s take time today to evaluate what moderation looks like to us and clean it out. Maybe empty your emails, sort through the pages you follow on social media- does it actually bring value? I know how guilty I am of staying in Facebook groups because of drama. Is that my idea of healthy? No. Additionally, with groups being able to monetize now, I have already seen groups build up as one thing and then be sold, so you might be in a group you’d never join. Go through who you follow, what you’re part of. And today I give you permission (not that you needed it) to finally unfriend that a-hole you’ve been wanting to unfriend. It’s time.

Mundane: Back in the day, we used to have to defrag our computers. Newer computers no longer need this so let me explain what that was. Everything on our computers, including tablets and phones, are stored in a physical location within its memory. Tiny little things. When you deleted it, that space just became empty and new things wouldnt always go there. So you would defrag, defragment, your computer which was this annoying long program that reorganized your computer's memory much like cleaning a bookshelf. If you didn’t do this every so often, your computer slowed down and would even stop working. We stopped really caring for our digital existence because we created computers that now do that on their own. So now, how often are we working to clear our digital space? Rarely. You can even teach your algorithm. Don’t like a tiktok or reel? Tell it, click you dont want to see it. Do that a dozen or so times a week and stay on videos you like for the entirety- that WILL teach your algorithm. Getting too many suggestions? Click the X, even if you dont dislike that content. The algorithm needs taught, and retaught over and over.

Magical: Holy fizzballs the digital world is a lot.I could and maybe someday will, write a whole journal entry on digital existence- but for now, its A LOT. Clear it, ward it, guard it. You can put sigils inside your phonecase. Because we do exist within that interface, it interacts with us. Ever get peeved by a troll online? Ward against that. Magically ward your devices routinely- often. More often than the spring cleanse.

Day 17: Tuesday — General clean the house day

This is the day to finish any projects that need to be done and give the house a once over. If possible, I try to do 20 minutes in each room. No, I don't clean each bedroom. Everyone is responsible for their own rooms. Hallways get 5 minutes for me. I also give the garden a once over if the weather permits it. The rest of the cleanse is resetting the house for the equinox which, this year, is at 10:46am EST on Friday. Today, you need to be the captain of your ship. This is a once over and a catch up day.

Day 18: Wednesday — Today is the day to sort those decorations and finalize any wall repairs

Clean them off, reflect on each item and decide if you’re keeping it. I decorate with a lot of family pictures. We’ve only had our photos taken professionally once, at a wedding. But we take thousands of in the moment pictures a year and each year I go over all the ones in frames and clean the frame while remembering that memory. I also do a photo order for new ones from the previous year. We will wash the walls tomorrow, so if you do any BIG panting, plan accordingly.

Mundane: For 18 days now, our walls were barren. They were echoey, plan, ugly even. Our brains have reset the space and we are now used to the bare space. These decorations have rested and  it’s time to reflect on them. Maybe you broke up with your loved one and you really don’t want to hang up that picture of y’all at the company picnic- or maybe you quit the job. Maybe a frame needs to be replaced, or painted. The fabric based arts may need dusted or washed. It’s time to clean these things because how often do we think to clean them?

Magical: Your items have rested. It was their winter and it is about to be our spring awakening. I like to wash them in salt water or tap with a selenite wand. Gently waking them up along with the memories they contain because tomorrow is their dawn, is today’s task.

Day 19: FINAL Wednesday — labor intensive day

Today we wash the walls, redecorate the home AND smoke/sound cleanse. This can be really big, or reasonably small. Please respect your time, abilities and body. To wash the walls intensively, I use a paint roller or swiffer and literally go top to bottom. To wash them gently, I gently spray water on them with a spray bottle. What I do varies year to year depending on spoons and capacity. I do like to spot scrub where needed, I do have kids after all. Be mindful of your walls, not all walls CAN be scrubbed. After the walls are washed, we decorate for spring. We are used to that barrenness…. Now it’s time to prepare for celebrations. Decorate your home as desired. All the year round stuff goes up as well as the spring decorations. When that is completed, I like to smoke cleanse my home starting from the bottom and working my way up. Windows open! Everyone, including children, are responsible for their bedrooms and yes I allow my children to smoke cleanse with close adult supervision.

Mundane & Magical: The whole purpose of this was to do a clean reset, well we did the re, time for the set. Set your home, enjoy your home. The walls hold a lot of emotion so we clean them before we decorate, then we decorate and smoke or sound cleanse. Now your brain, used to the bare walls, will have a full refreshed look at your home for the awakening season. This is also around the time I set new wards for my home and family. We leave out cake for Ostara, and her hare, welcoming spring. Some years I postpone this till the next day for practical reasons. This is absolutely reasonable. Please use this as it works best for you.

March 20th Spring awakens

The equinox ushering in the seasons of change will occur at 10:46am EST. From this moment on, in the northern hemisphere, light brings light.  Each day not only has more light than the previous, but it now outshadows the dark. Spring, and fall, are the seasons of change. They are when most are able to focus on the beauty of nature because of that change. We’re not used to the green of summer or the brown/white of winter. We watch the brown grow into green or the green fade into brown. Awaken your creative lust for your own life and may you enjoy the lighted seasons with a new zest for life.
